A Greek wedding is a celebration of profound spiritual and communal joy. The day often begins with the sacred crowning ceremony, the stefana, held at a nearby Greek Orthodox church, binding the couple in faith and tradition.
From there, the celebration transitions to the reception—an exuberant expression of kefi (joy) that requires a venue built to honor both heritage and hospitality. This is a day defined by two pillars: an abundant, authentic culinary offering and, most critically, the space for uninhibited dancing.
Many historic venues, while beautiful, were not designed for the energy of a Greek reception. At 440 Elm, we provide a rare combination: a setting with the classical grandeur to match your aesthetic and the modern, robust infrastructure your celebration demands.
he Grand Ballroom at 440 Elm provides a stunningly appropriate backdrop for a Greek celebration. As a Renaissance Revival landmark designed by legendary architect Elmer Grey—the visionary behind the Beverly Hills Hotel and Huntington Library—its architecture is rooted in classical principles. The soaring 30-foot coffered ceilings and majestic, overscaled Ionic columns create a sense of timeless elegance, serving as a perfect canvas that beautifully complements the Hellenic tradition.
When the music starts, the horo (circle dance) is not a brief formality; it is the heart of the party, bringing together generations in a single, unified line. This tradition cannot be compromised by a small, inadequate dance floor or structural columns that break the circle.
The Grand Ballroom layout solves this exact challenge. While retaining its historic grandeur, the adaptive reuse creates a large, wide space in a grand setting. The original sloped floor was removed and replaced with an expansive, wall-to-wall flat surface, purpose-built to function as a true ballroom.
This vast, unobstructed expanse provides the essential infrastructure for your celebration. It allows you to place dinner tables around a central, oversized dance floor, ensuring every guest remains part of the action. Here, there is ample room for the entire family to dance with abandon.
